Sedation & Sleep Dentistry

If fear has kept you away from the dentist for years, you are not alone — and you won't be judged here. Sedation dentistry lets anxious patients receive care in genuine comfort, from a calming breath of nitrous oxide to IV moderate sedation where the appointment passes in what feels like minutes.

Your sedation options

  • Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) — breathed through a soft nose mask, it produces calm and lightness within minutes and clears just as fast. You can drive yourself home. Great for mild anxiety and for children.
  • Oral sedation — a prescribed tablet taken before your visit leaves you deeply relaxed and drowsy. You'll need someone to drive you, and many patients remember little of the appointment.
  • IV moderate sedation — administered and monitored by Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud, IV sedation provides profound relaxation with rapid adjustment as needed. Ideal for surgical procedures and severe anxiety.

Who benefits from sedation

  • Patients with dental anxiety or past traumatic experiences
  • Anyone needing long or complex treatment — get more done in fewer visits
  • People with a strong gag reflex or difficulty getting numb
  • Patients with special needs who find dental visits overwhelming

Sleep apnea & snoring appliances

Sleep dentistry at Spinel also means helping you sleep. For patients with snoring or diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea who can't tolerate a CPAP machine, we provide custom oral sleep appliances that gently reposition the lower jaw to keep the airway open — small, silent, and travel-friendly. We work alongside your physician's sleep study diagnosis.

Good to know

Sedation Dentistry — your questions answered

Is sedation dentistry safe?

Yes — we review your health history and medications carefully, match the sedation level to your needs, and monitor you throughout. IV sedation is administered by a dentist with advanced sedation training.

Will I be unconscious?

No. Even with IV moderate sedation you remain conscious and responsive — you're simply deeply relaxed, and most patients remember very little afterwards.

Can I get sedation just for a cleaning?

Absolutely. If anxiety is what stands between you and routine care, nitrous oxide for a hygiene visit is common, inexpensive, and nothing to be embarrassed about.

How do I know if I need a sleep appliance?

If you snore heavily, wake unrefreshed, or have been diagnosed with sleep apnea but can't use a CPAP, ask us. We'll coordinate with your physician — a sleep study confirms the diagnosis, and we craft the appliance.
